Authorities are responding to a reported explosion at the Santa Maria Courthouse in California, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office. A small explosive device went off at the courthouse on Wednesday morning, though no injuries have been reported. Sheriff’s deputies are quickly mobilizing in the area, and other locations are being checked for additional explosives.
Suspect in Custody, Investigation Ongoing
Law enforcement officials have detained a suspect connected to the incident. The individual was reportedly inside the courthouse and threw a bag in front of Department 9, the courtroom used for arraignments. The suspect was taken into custody by 9 a.m. and transferred from a Santa Maria Police car to a Sheriff’s Office vehicle.
Emergency Response in Full Force
Emergency personnel and law enforcement converged on the Santa Maria Superior Court complex after the explosion was reported. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the explosion and urged people to avoid the area, warning that it was not yet safe. Multiple ambulances were dispatched to the scene, although no injuries have been officially confirmed.
